Backpack-Sized Blood Pumping Device – The Freedom Driver

The Freedom Driver, a portable 13 pound “wearable” device provided by The University of Michigan Frankel Cardiovascular Center, allows a patient awaiting a heart transplant to leave the hospital and be functional, while waiting for a heart transplant. The driver, in conjunction with the SynCardia temporary Total Artificial Heart, becomes a much lighter, backpack-like alternative to the other FDA-approved driver, dubbed “Big Blue”, which weighs in at 413 pounds and was the size of “a washing machine.” Read more at:  http://www.umcvc.org/news/archive/201501/patient-leaves-university-michigan-hospital-without-human.
