First transplant of stem cells from another human donor

From Engadget.com comes a story about a Japanese man with age-related macular degeneration  has received the first transplant of stem cells from another human donor.  Macular degeneration is the deterioration of the central portion of the retina causing difficulty in focusing the central vision in the eye, deteriorating to legal blindness. Doctors took the donor’s skin cells and turned them into a state where they can become many kinds of cells,  that then became retinal cells. The hope is that these cells will halt the degeneration and save the patient’s remaining eyesight.
